Elements of Design - Shape 2-D or Form 3-D

Shape is a result of when one or more lines crossover each other and enclose a given space creating an inside and and an outside. Shape is 2 dimensional having both length and width but not having any depth. A photograph, poster, painting, computer generated image are all comprised of various shapes since each is a 2 dimensional visual medium.

Shape can be categorized as either geometric or organic. Organic shapes or forms typically have irregular outlines and are often assymetrical. Geometric shapes or forms typically encompass regular, named shapes such as squares, rectangles, cubes, spheres, cones, etc.

Form is any object that has 3 dimensions – length, width, and depth. Objects that are 3 dimensional can only be represented in a illusionary way on a 2 dimensional medium through the use of lighting and shading techniques. However, with the advent of new display technologies, it is now possible to see 3-D images through the use of 3-D glasses, holograms, etc.

[Guided Search]

Open your Training Room 1 Project. Using lines, construct some representations of objects or shapes that typically are found in a bedroom. This may include things like ceiling lights, windows, night tables and beds.

When you are done adding objects to your bedroom, save your updated work to your course folder as Training Room 1 Project.
