Elements of Design - Line

Using any drawing program on your computer or paper and pencil, practice drawing lines that have different characteristics. Are you able to draw the following:
• Thin line
• Thick line
• Short line
• Long line
• Horizontal line
• Vertical line
• Diagonal line
• Curving line
• Zigzag line
• 2 lines perpendicular to each other
• 2 lines parallel to each other
• Sharp line
• Fuzzy line

Many examples of the use of lines can be found on the internet. Using an internet search engine, enter the search term “elements of design line” or “design elements line” for websites that that discuss or illustrate uses of different lines in visual images. Study 3 or 4 different websites until you feel confident that you understand the influences that lines can play in a visual image.

For this activity, use the drawing tools in your image editing program to create a view of a bedroom. You will need to construct the outline for the walls, ceiling and floor of the room. Vary the width of your lines.
