Basic Terminology

At the most basic level, typography is a combination of font, size, spacing, and colour. When typographers and graphic designers talk about the text on a webpage or poster, they often employ very specific language. Some of the terms that you will hear or read about include terms like:  character, type, typeface, font, font family.

Characters – are the individual letters of the alphabet, numbers or numerals, and punctuation marks that can be created to written/printed communication (text).

Type - the characters (letters, numbers, symbols) that make up the visual text and display of a reading matter. http://www.will-harris.com/use-type.htm

Typeface – is a set of characters of the same design.

Fonts – are the digital representations of typefaces and are also small computer files that are stored on a computer to allow for those representations.

Font family – is an interchangeable term often used for typeface.
