Focus

This training room will allow you to focus on how visual media artists/designers use various design elements to create visual compositions that communicate to an audience. You will build your understanding of design elements through a series of explorations of different visual compositions and how the artist used design elements to create effective messages.

Outcomes

Following the completion of Training Room 1, you will be able to:

  • define the elements of design

  • identify the elements of design using examples

  • describe the impact of each element on the visual message; e.g., point, line, shape, form, colour, depth, direction, light, visual weight, space, texture, tone.

Introduction

There is general agreement in the media  industry as to elements that make up designs, but sometimes the labels differ. By breaking designs into their parts, or elements, you will discover how these elements combine to create meaningful images. Through creative combinations of the elements, you, as a designer can create a meaningful message to communicate that is in a simple, clear form for the person viewing the image  to understand.

Design elements can be categorized in 2 ways:

  • the dimension in which each element is drawn.

  • how each element is perceived by the viewer.
