Introduction

In Training Room 2, you have gained a greater appreciation of how artists use design principles to effectively manipulate the elements in a visual composition so that the viewer is influenced by the work that they see. To summarize your learning in this training room, you will produce a visual presentation that illustrates each design principle using the medium of your choice. You will present your project to your classmates and solicit feedback from them regarding how clearly you were able to present the principles of design.

Materials

Depending on your interest, you may choose to work in any format that is available to you. The following materials list is only a suggested list. You should consult with your teacher before deciding on what communication technology you will work with.

  • Image editing software

  • Animation software

  • Digital SLR camera

  • Video camcorder

  • Printer (colour or black and white)

  • Presentation software

  • poster paper

  • markers, colouring pencils, paints & brush

Project Assessment

This is a formative assessment and is intended for you to practice your skills until you are proficient in the identification and description of the various principles of design. Your evaluation will be based on the Design Principles Rubric found in the Toolkit. Before you begin work on your project, you are advised to preview the rubric and the expectations for this project. You will be able to resubmit your project after receiving critical feedback from your teacher or classmates.

Directions

Throughout Training Room 2, you have been learning about the many different principles of design. To complete the requirements for the Training Room 2 Project, begin by brainstorming a possible theme that you can use that will allow you to incorporate as many design principles as you can. Develop a strategy to creatively display samples of each design principle. Remember that you are trying to inform an audience what principles of design are – in essence, you are creating a “cheat sheet” for studying principles of design. If you encounter any difficulties with a particular principle, you should refer back to the page on that topic.

Suggested Time

Depending on what medium you wish to work with, the creation of the visual compositions will likely take between 1 – 6 hours. The assembly of your presentation will require an additional 2 – 3 hours.

Project Summary

As you were creating your visual display or presentation on the principles of design, you were reinforcing your learning from this training room and contributing to the learning of design principles by your classmates.
