Principle of Design – Repetition(rhythm/pattern)

Repetition is created when you repeat design elements such as shapes, lines, objects, light, direction, etc. in a visual composition.

  • Repetition  helps direct eye movement

  • A composition with rhythm usually repeats some element in the composition

  • Repeating similar shapes connected with each other or overlapping or mirroring each other implies movement or restlessness, or more emphasis

  • Repetiton can use Proportion to create emphasis.

  • Repetitive elements create rhythm

  • Repetition or pattern is built into certain familiar shapes

  • Repetition can add to the mood

  • Horizontal repetitive lines make tall things look wider

  • Vertical repetitive lines make wide things look thinner.

[Guided Search]

Repetition can be achieved in many different ways using many different design elements. Using your internet search engine, enter the search term “principle of design repetition” or “principle of design pattern” or “principle of design rhythm” and look through several different websites for how repetition can be used in a visual composition.

When you are done, ask yourself if you feel confident that you can identify the use of repetition in an image and how that repetition creates a certain feel or mood in a visual message.
