Introduction
In your previous Training Room 1, you learned about the “building blocks” that artists use to compose different visual messages. Putting these elements of design together to create effective visual messages is the next step. In this training room, artists have proposed guidelines that differentiate a good visual image from a poor visual image. These are referred to as principles of design.
Design principles:
-
help make visual images pleasing and interesting to look at to an audience.
-
are used to plan the space that design elements are placed within the composition.
-
provide guidance to an artist to follow to make certain the intended message gets to the intended audience.
Outcomes
Following the completion of Training Room 2, you will be able to:
-
define the principles of design
-
identify the principles of design using examples
-
describe the impact of each principle on the visual message; e.g., balance, emphasis, proportion (scale), repetition (rhythm/pattern), unity, contrast, harmony, proximity, variety
Focus
This training room will allow you to focus on how visual media artists/designers use various design principles to create visual compositions that communicate to an audience. You will build your understanding of design principles through a series of explorations of different visual compositions and how the artist used design principles to create effective messages.
